Love That Defeats A Mount Of Hatred

Dr. Michael LaitmanThe “evil inclination” is not just an inborn desire to hurt someone. That natural attribute isn’t evil yet. We reveal our evil inclination only when we start studying the Torah, draw the Light that Reforms, and wish to unite by way of this Light.

In other words, the evil inclination does not unfold at the simple, mundane level of existence. Rather, it gets revealed only to the people who have a spiritual gene, the “point in the heart,” who join the Kabbalistic group and start working in it in order to transcend their egoistic nature, the intention “for oneself.”

They undergo all the preliminary stages of development, the internal states of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Egyptian exile, until they come to the state of despair when they realize that they cannot unite, as it is said: “And the sons of Israel cried out from the work.” That’s when the evil inclination, regarded as Pharaoh, is gradually revealed to them.

But it isn’t all. They flee from Pharaoh, as if rise above him, and then arrive at the revelation of evil. Having crossed the Red Sea and thereby detached themselves from the evil of egoism, they now come to realize that this evil is like Mount Sinai (the mount of hatred). Only under condition that they reach this realization can the method of correction of evil be revealed to them, which is called the “Giving of the Torah.”

Afterwards, they meet the second half of the condition: “I created the evil inclination, and I created the Torah as a spice, as the remedy to reform it.” If you do find the force of the breaking within called the “evil inclination,” you will be able to reform it. This is the force that separates you from the others, and it unfolds only if you are eager to unite, giving your very best to unification.

Then, we get to know the “evil inclination,” and it is a very exalted state of revelation. We discover that we must become as one man with one heart, in mutual guarantee (before that, one can’t comprehend what it means). And now we develop the need for the Torah: the remedy for correction. In fact, we begin to realize that we are unable to do anything on our own, and all our achievements are due to the Light that Reforms that has revealed this evil to us and can now reform it into good.

When the Light establishes peace between us, it means that it adds intention to bestow to our evil inclination, and then the “angel of death” gradually turns into the “holy angel.” Therefore, it is said: “I created the Torah as a spice” to the evil inclination, meaning that we only add intention to bestow to it, as a spice, and do not destroy it. All our hatred remains and always unfolds at an increasingly greater degree, in order to give us an opportunity to build a greater screen over it.

Thus we grow: From a small point within us, everyone can grow to the world of Infinity and gain all this enormous desire, the Kli (vessel) that the Creator initially created. It is namely by way of the evil inclination that we become similar to the Creator, growing on it like the rising dough.
